   Is VA Therapy Music Therapy

   Abstract
   The paper examines the theoretical background to VA therapy and introduces four very different VA systems. It discusses research carried out with these systems.
   In Europe, music therapy is traditionally seen as a process that develops from an active' musical relationship. In contrast VA therapy is apassive' intervention that transmits pre-recorded music to the body through speakers built into a chair, table or bed unit. In the light of this, the author concludes by asking - is VA therapy, music therapy?

   I do not quite agree with the description of traditional European look at MT. In the 1950ies and 60ies we defined active and passive MT. Passive was divided in listening to performed music or canned music. Described in the books of Teirich and Pontvik. Harm Willms also wrote an interesting article on choice of music and instruments in therapy.
   We also find several sites on Internet , in which body perceived stimuli are defined as VAT. I rather like Tony Wigram's definition of Vibroacoustic Therapy (VAT) and Vibroacoustic Music (VAM).
